Getting to Bustamante, Nuevo Leon

Again, Bustamante is located in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico.

Getting there from Monterrey (the capital city):

By Car: About 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Monterrey on Highway 85 (Carretera a Nuevo Laredo) north, then follow the signs to Bustamante. It is approx 2 hours.

By Bus: Various coach services operate between Monterrey and Bustamante, they depart from Monterrey’s central bus station.

From Other Major Cities:

By Air: Fly into Monterrey International Airport (MTY), then follow the directions above.

The nearest U.S. city is Laredo, Texas, about a 3-hour drive (140 miles) to Monterrey.

History

Bustamante was founded by several Tlaxcalteca families in 1686 and they named it San Miguel de Aguayo de la Nueva Tlaxcalteca in honor of the Marquis of San Miguel de Aguayo.

In 1832, the name was changed to San Miguel de Bustamante by former military and president of Mexico, Anastasio Bustamante.

In the XIX century, it was known for producing walnuts, avocados, and mezcal.

In 2018, Bustamante was granted the award of Magical Town, making it the third in the state after Santiago and Linares.

It is also called “grutas de palmito” because the person who discovered it was looking for baby palms in this area.

What to expect? You will discover interconnected cavernous tunnels such as rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites, and your walk will be illuminated along the way.

Also, the tour covers 250 meters with a duration of 45 minutes, I recommend that you hire a guided tour for peace of mind and get the most out of it.

After finishing your tour you should take a beautiful picture at the viewpoint located outside.

2. Bustamante Canyon and Ojo de Agua San Lorenzo

The Canyon and natural pools are visible and accessible on your way to the grottos.

You can also go hiking or camping, or if you prefer something more extreme, you can go mountain biking.

For these activities, I recommend that you wear comfortable clothes and bring water for hydration.

At Ojo de Agua San Lorenzo you can camp or rent a cabin and enjoy the barbecue grills.

Furthermore, the beautiful turquoise clear waters of the water bodies are home to several fish that you will see.

3. Admire the Parish of San Miguel Arcangel

This parish will catch your eye instantly with its beautiful colors that can be seen from the outside.

It was built between the XVII and XVIII centuries, it is located in front of the main square of Bustamante Pueblo Mágico and boasts a neoclassic style façade.

The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel is considered a historical monument by the INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History).

Also, inside the parish church you will find an image of the black Christ made of corn cane known as the Lord of Tlaxcala, which the town has a lot of faith and devotion, it is more than 400 years old.

There are beautiful trees and gardens where you will have peace and tranquility around the parish.

It is also popular among people who are getting married or planning a religious event.

4. Visit the Kiss Alley in Bustamante, Nuevo Leon

A few towns in Mexico have a “Kiss Alley,” like the famous one in Guanajuato City. Each, of course, with a different story to tell.
